Dearstyne files for third term as Hubbard County attorney
Hubbard County Attorney Don Dearstyne has filed for a third term.
“We have accomplished significant improvements in the prosecution of cases since I took office in January 2007. We have significantly increased the success rate of criminal prosecutions that have gone to jury trial. My office prevails in obtaining a guilty verdict in approximately 80 percent of the cases taken to jury trial. In the past eight years we have obtained successful resolutions to a number of cases involving violent crimes, drug trafficking and sex offenses that resulted in the defendant(s) being placed in prison for public protection. I was awarded Out State Prosecutor of the year in 2013 for the successful prosecution of a difficult vehicle homicide case in 2012. My office has worked closely with our colleagues in law enforcement to achieve these results. As your County Attorney, I will make certain that these successes continue.
“I have been practicing law for over 25 years. During this time I have prosecuted over 75 jury trials, including some of the biggest cases in our region. Experience is essential as there is no time for on the job training in this position.
“In late 2007, the City of Park Rapids approached me to take over prosecution of their gross misdemeanors and misdemeanor cases. This contract with Park Rapids has brought over $300,000.00 in revenue into the County General Fund. This has reduced the levy dollars needed to operate my office. It has resulted in an overall savings to taxpayers in both dollars and efficiencies of prosecution. I will ensure that these efficiencies continue.”
Dearstyne is a board member of Hubbard In Prevention, a member of the Lions and Rotary clubs and a member of Calvary Lutheran Church. A Viet Nam vet, Dearstyne said he believes his war and civic responsibilities have been valuable experiences in his tenure.
