David E. Waggoner

David E. Waggoner, 70, of Park Rapids, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2013 at the V.A. Hospital in Minneapolis.

David was born Feb. 11, 1943 in Wichita, Kan. to Cecil and Lucille (Campbell) Waggoner. It was in Wichita that he attended public schools and graduated from the Valley Center High School in 1961.

Dave went on to attend Kansas State University on a football scholarship. He also attended Eldorado State Junior College where he played football. He entered the United States Navy in 1967, where he proudly served his country as a radioman in Viet Nam on river- boats in 1968 and continued serving in the reserves until 1972.

Upon returning home after his honorable discharge, David completed his college education at Wichita State University where he earned his degree in business with a minor in accounting.

On Jan. 14, 1971, Dave was united in marriage to Patricia Kay Downing in Wichita. This union was blessed with three children, Debra, Edward and Nancy.

In 1972, Dave began a 25- year career with the K-Mart Corporation where he worked in management until his retirement in 1997. Dave and Patricia then retired to the Park Rapids area where they bought Reed's Sporting Goods store and returned it to its historical name, Fullers Sporting Goods. They operated this business until 2003.

Dave's love for the outdoors brought him to Park Rapids. He was an avid fisherman and hunter who always looked forward to spending time with family and friends on the water or in the woods.

He loved following the Minnesota Twins and watching as many football games as he could. Dave was a long-time member of the Park Rapids Lions Club and the Otto Hendrickson American Legion Post 212 in Park Rapids.

Above all, Dave devoted his life to his precious wife, Pat, his three children and four beloved grandchildren who he enjoyed following in their school events.

Dave is survived by his wife of 42 years, Patricia of Park Rapids; three children, Debra (Dave) Bannerman of Park Rapids, Edward (Kim) Waggoner of Park Rapids and Nancy Waggoner of St. Paul; four grandchildren, Jake and Carly Waggoner and Joseph and Liz Bannerman of Park Rapids; brother, Clark (Sandy) Waggoner of Sapulpa, Okla.; sister, Norma Waggoner of Bartlesville, Okla.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Lucille.

Funeral service: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 6 at Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids.

Visitation: Noon to 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home on Wednesday.
