"Senior Surf Day," a computer class for seniors, will be offered from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 18 at the Park Rapids Area Library.

The class will assist seniors in navigating the Internet and general computer use.

The Bemidji North Country Regional Hospital Diabetes Resource Center (DRC) will be holding its diabetes support group meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 18, in the hospital's Education Center.

Friday, March 19

Nevis Boy Scout Troop 56 will host a "Roses for Spring" sale from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 19 and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 20 at T&M in Park Rapids and Nevis.

Suzy and Hondo are back to cure cabin fever with swing dancing instruction from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 19 in the Park Rapids Area High School gym.

  Swing music has an infectious accent on the upbeat and makes even non-dancers tap their feet, and snap their fingers.  Swing dancing is usually characterized by its bounce and energy as well as lots of spins or under arm turns. 

Come and find your own definition of swing.

A SCUBA diving class will be offered to individuals interested in becoming a certified diver - with little or no experience - March 26-28 at the high school pool.

The class meets from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The class, offered by Mick's Scuba, covers all necessary class and pool training required for certification.  The program is by a PADI 5 Star Training Center. 

Participants must be at least 10 years old and have basic swimming ability.    Registration deadline is Friday, March 19. To register contact Mick's Scuba at 800-285-3483.

Saturday, March 20

The Twisted Stitchers Fiber Guild will meet at 9:30

a.m. Saturday, March 20 at 210 S Main St, Park Rapids.

This meeting will be devoted to working on individual projects and show and tell. Programs for future meetings will be discussed and scheduled.

The city of Laporte is sponsoring a fund raising dinner for its 4th of July 2010 celebration.

Corned beef and cabbage will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, March 20 at the Laporte School Commons.

Free will donations will be received.

Lake George Area Association will host a fish fry from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 20 at the Lake George Café.

The menu will include fish, baked potato, salad or coleslaw, a dinner roll, dessert and a beverage.

Sunday, March 21

A Move Over Meat cooking demonstration will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, March 21 at the Share 'n Care on Highway 371 in Hackensack.

The free event will introduce plant-powered recipes to help prevent and reverse heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes and depression.

The event will include recipe handouts, taste samples and a door prize. (Use the rear door.)

A 20th annual St. Patrick's Day dinner will be served from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, March 21 at the Guthrie Community Center.

The menu includes roast beef with all the trimmings and dessert.

Monday, March 22

Learn to make quality jewelry using gemstone and mineral beads from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, March 22 at the Park Rapids Area High School. 

Students will start with earrings, learning the wrapped loop technique.  This technique will be used as the class progresses to pendants and necklaces.  The fee includes all supplies and handouts.  Students may bring their own treasures to incorporate into jewelry.  Robin Cunningham will instruct.

Tuesday, March 23

    Headwaters Center for Lifelong Learning (HCLL) and Beagle Books will sponsor a day with award winning mystery and romance writer Lois Greiman Tuesday, March 23.  

Greiman will sign her books from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Beagle Books on Third Street.

She will then present "Not One Clue:  Mystery, Romance and More" from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Northwoods Bank in Park Rapids.

    Since selling her first book to Avon in 1992, she has sold 22 romance novels, five mysteries and the first in her Witches of Mayfair series.

Before becoming a full time writer, she professionally trained and showed Arabian horses for several years. She has been a fashion model, fitness instructor and a veterinary assistant.

    Greiman produces two or three novels a year. She won the Daphne du Maurier Award for excellence in mainstream mystery and romantic suspense, received the Affaire de Couer's Critic's Choice Award, Romantic Times K.I.S.S. Award and has been nominated for Romance Writer's of America's prestigious Rita.

A class presenting a working knowledge of Microsoft Word will be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, March 23 and 25 at the Park Rapids Area High School.

Students will learn to create letters, reports and invitations using the 2003 and 2007 versions.

Wednesday, March 24

The Hospice Foundation of America (HFA) will present a nationally recognized distance-learning program live via satellite from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 24 which may be viewed at North Country Regional Hospital Education Center, Bemidji.

For more than a decade, this annual educational program has been instrumental in educating healthcare professionals and families on issues affecting end-of-life care. The program provides an opportunity for a wide variety of professionals - including doctors, nurses, funeral directors, psychologists, educators, social workers and bereavement counselors - to share and exchange ideas and obtain continuing education credits.

  This year HFA's 17th annual National Bereavement Teleconference focuses on "Cancer and End-of-Life Care."

It will address care options related to cancer diagnoses as well as loss and grief reactions for patients, families and professional caregivers. The teleconference will also examine psychosocial aspects of cancer, pain management, and ethical issues related to the disease.

The teleconference is moderated by Frank Sesno, director of the School of Media and Public Affairs at The George Washington University,

A defensive driving refresher class for those needing to renew certification will be offered from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 25 at the Frank White Education Center.

Pre-schoolers (ages 3 to 5) and parents or guardians are invited to "build, pound and more" from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 25 at the Frank White Education Center.

Kids can build fun wood projects with master carpenter Terry DeYoung instructing. All supplies and tools will be provided but hammers are welcome.

The Headwaters Softball League will hold its first pre-season meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 25 in the basement of the Eagles Club in Park Rapids.

Anyone interested in participating in the Headwaters Softball League should attend this meeting or send a team representative.

Saturday, March 27

A pre-woodtick season hike on North Country Trail will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 27.

Hikers will gather at Highway 64 and East Steamboat Forest Road, located about 4 miles north of Highway 34, and east of Akeley. They will head east on the trail and return for about a four-mile round trip.

Hikers should dress in footwear and clothing appropriate for the weather and carry water and trail snacks. Children and pets are welcome, but must be with a responsible adult.

A carpool will leave from Ace Hardware in Park Rapids at 12:30 p.m. Other car pools can be arranged at alternate locations depending on interest.
