Coborn's hat trick not enough in loss to Prairie Centre

Sam Coborn's fifth hat trick of the season wasn't enough to lead the Park Rapids-Menahga-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team past Prairie Centre Thursday night.

Cody Bartkowicz and Nate Mettenburg scored two goals each in leading Prairie Centre to a 5-3 Mid-State Conference win at Long Prairie.

Coborn scored at the 13:37 and 15:14 marks to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead after the first period. Noah MacPherson, Bailey Mueller and Levi Erickson had assists.

Ryan Connor's power-play goal and goals by Bartkowicz and Mettenburg gave Prairie Centre a 3-2 lead before Coborn completed his hat trick with a power-play goal at the 14:57 mark to tie the game. Ian Johnson set up Coborn's third goal of the game. The Panthers held a 17-10 edge in shots in that period.

Bartkowicz scored the game-winning goal at the 9:38 mark and Mettenburg added an insurance goal at the 13:22 mark to give Prairie Centre the win.

Scott Smith made 22 saves for the Panthers, who finished with a 41-27 edge in shots. The loss dropped Park Rapids to 3-2-1 in conference play and 8-8-1 overall. Prairie Centre improved to 2-1 in the conference and 7-10 overall.
