Coborn returns, aids Panthers' 6-2 victory
After sitting out the last six games with a concussion, Sam Coborn returned to the ice to lead the Park Rapids-Menahga-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team to a 6-2 Mid-State Conference win over Prairie Centre Tuesday night at Long Prairie.
Coborn had a goal and an assist while Noah MacPherson scored twice as the Panthers improved to 5-2 in conference games. Prairie Centre fell to 2-3-1 in the conference.
Despite being outshot 16-11 in the first period, the Panthers held a 1-0 lead behind MacPherson's goal at the 1:03 mark. Frank Moren assisted on that goal.
A four-goal second period put the Panthers in control. Ian Johnson scored 20 seconds into the period and Luke Jaeger set up Drew Bade at the 1:54 mark. Johnson and Coborn had assists on a goal by Benson Ringle at the 6:09 mark before Prairie Centre closed the gap to 4-2 with a power-play goal by Brady Schulzetenberg and a goal by Derek Holm. Ringle assisted on a power-play goal by Coborn at the 14:43 mark as the Panthers carried a 5-2 cushion into the final period. Park Rapids held a 16-15 edge in shots in that period.
The Panthers controlled play in the final period by holding a 20-9 advantage in shots. Moren assisted on a goal by MacPherson at the 15:05 mark to account for the only scoring in that period.
Park Rapids goalie Cody Brumbaugh made 38 saves for the win as the Panthers improved to 8-12 on the season. Prairie Centre fell to 10-9-1 overall.
