Joseph Schweitzer, left, and Skyler Howard, both of Park Rapids, planted sedum in a parking lot median on the Brainerd campus of Central Lakes College Thursday as part of their studies in Landscape Technology in the Horticulture program of the community and technical college. Instructor Jeff Dirks said sedum is a hardy, drought-resistant perennial that will help grounds-keepers reduce the use of water, resources, and time. Students grew 4,000 plants in the campus greenhouse and partnered with College Environmental Committee to inaugurate the effort that will involve more plants in coming years. The project is one of many that beautify the grounds and offer real-world conditions, such as the 28-degree windchill students endured during the four-hour exercise.
