City finalizing Pioneer Park makeover
Plans to spruce up Pioneer Park in downtown Park Rapids are moving along.
Park Board chairwoman Sue Cutler said a finalized plan has been completed by Touch of Eden landscaping and quotes are being solicited from area landscapers. The deadline is July 2.
The council previously expressed interest in having landscaping additions and a shelter in place before the 2013 Governor's Fishing Opener next spring.
Rotary is interested in working with the city to purchase the shelter for the park, said councilman Dave Konshok.
The Park Board will review the quotes at its next meeting and ultimately make a recommendation to the council.
In other business, the council:
n Approved a request from the Downtown Business Association to allow six temporary directional walking map kiosks on Main Avenue.
The kiosks will be 23 inches by 15 inches and placed on the light bowls on Main Avenue between 2nd and 4th Streets. The map will include business names and locations similar to those found at shopping malls.
The DBA hopes to have the kiosks in place by July 4.
n Approved a temporary/interim sign policy to allow for temporary community and special event off-site signage for the remainder of 2012.
City planner Dan Walker said the Planning Commission had been working on the ordinance and hopes to have a permanent ordinance in place by next year.
Some downtown business owners expressed concern with having too many signs around town that could create clutter.
The sign policy is temporary so it will be discussed more before a permanent policy is in place.
n Recognized Kristine Pohl for 10 years of employment with the city and Scott Olson for 20 years of employment with the city.
n Tabled a request for a public facilities use permit for the Park Rapids Lakes Area Arts Council to use Pioneer Park Friday, Aug. 17.
City administrator Bill Smith said he was concerned work on Pioneer Park might begin before that time and it wouldn't be in a condition to have people using it.
He will find out more information and bring the issue back to the council at a future meeting.
n Cancelled the regular June 26 council meeting because of lack of business to come before the council.
