Celebration of Mushrooms is Sept. 6-8
Join the Paul Bunyan Mushroom Club of Minnesota Sept. 6 through Sept. 8 in a weekend of mushroom adventure among the hills and forests of Deep Portage Learning Center, east of Hackensack.
Participants will be collecting mushrooms in the forest and listening to experts on mushroom identification and mushroom cultivation. Other topics covered will be mushroom diversity and their roles in the environment.
The chief mycologist and guest speaker will be Dr. Tom Volk from the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse, where he is Professor of Biology. Tentative plans begin with participants arriving Friday. Participants are welcome to arrive Friday afternoon or evening with dinner of their choice.
Saturday’s program will begin after breakfast at 9 a.m. Most of the day Saturday will be spent collecting and identifying mushrooms. Other topics will be covered, including mushroom cooking. The evening program will be the lecture by Tom Volk at 7 p.m.
Mushroom collections will be displayed and part of Sunday morning program will be reviewing what was collected Saturday. Mike Kempenich, owner of The Mikeology Store (mikeologystore.wordpress.com) and founder of the Minnesota Mushroom Forum on Facebook will talk about mushroom cultivation.
