Cass County man gets 110 months in sex crime

Melvin Eugene Smith, III, age 30, was sentenced to serve 110 months in prison after pleading guilty to Criminal Sexual Conduct in the Second Degree in Cass County, MN   The Complaint filed by the Cass County Attorney’s Office alleged Smith had sexually touched a young boy on multiple occasions in 2011 while he was taking care of the child in Remer.  Judge Jana Austad committed Smith to the Commissioner of Corrections immediately.  Upon his release from prison, Smith will be subject to predatory offender registration and will be assigned a predatory offender risk level.  He has been convicted of failing to register as a predatory offender on two prior occasions.
