Carol Leah Anderson, 72, of Nevis, died Monday, July 21, 2014 at Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids.

Carol Leah Alston was born March 15, 1942 in Chicago, Ill. the only child of Ethel (Fraki) and Ben Alston. She grew up and went to Chicago Public Schools through the 10th grade followed by 11th and 12th grades in New York Mills graduating in 1959.

She was homecoming queen runner-up and she had the leading role in the senior class play. Wondering if these early experiences pointed to a career in politics or acting made her smile. Neither - she just wanted to be a wife and mother.

She married Gary Berletic in 1961, and in a few years she became the mother of three busy active, adorable sons. They lived near Gary's family in Yonkers, N.Y. later moving to Southern Minnesota in the mid-1970s. Sadly the 21 year marriage ended in divorce in 1982.

The most important role of Carol's life was being a full-time wife and mother. The couple settled for one car, a manageable budget, inexpensive recreation and shopping smart. Carol did work at a variety of part-time jobs when all the boys were in school. Babysitting, worked at a bakery, she sold clothes at home parties, sold vacuums door to door, was the assistant manager at a restaurant, did secretarial and receptionist work, nurse's aide, she was a caretaker for a senior apartment building, did home care and massage therapy. Each job was her favorite as she was doing it.

The summer of 1984 brought Carol to New York Mills for her 25th high school class reunion. Former classmate Gary Anderson of Nevis (who was also divorced) sat behind Carol for most classes also attended the reunion. The two talked and talked and talked - exchanged phone numbers and promised to keep in touch after the reunion. They were married six months later. They have resided in Nevis since.

Carol started a community non-denominational Bible study group in Nevis several years ago, a group she enjoyed being part of.

She is survived by her husband, Gary Anderson of Nevis; her son, Joseph Wayne (Linda) Berletic of Warrensburg, Mo.; grandchildren, Meagen, Alex; step-grandchildren, Nathan and William; her son, Jeffrey Todd (Amy) Berletic of Lakeville; granddaughter, Callie; her son, Michael John (Andrea) Berletic of Rochester; grandchildren, Bryce, Maureen, and Sam; her stepson, Thane (Diane) Anderson of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; step-grandchildren, T.J., Elsie, Justin; Stepson, Joel (Diane) Anderson of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; step-grandchildren, Angela, and Alex.
