Carlson, Overmyer win two individual events as Park Rapids boys coast to title

     Winning eight events and scoring points in the other 12 events led the Park Rapids boys track and field team to the Subsection 8-29A title for the fourth year in a row.

     Austin Carlson and Isaac Overmyer took first in two individual events to lead the way as the Panthers compiled 204 points to lead the seven-team field at Lake of the Woods Thursday. Bagley/Fosston was a distant second with 116 points while Nevis finished fifth with 62 points.

     After the 4 x 800-meter relay team of Nathanael Rairdon, Adam Jacobi, Brandon Day and Jack Christenson took fourth in 9:51.78, Per Jorgenson won the 110 hurdles in 17.49 and Kalvin Hagan (in 12.22) and Tristan Breitweser (in 12.29) went 4-5 in the 100 dash.

     Remington Hagan, Kurt Fritze, Breitweser and Carlson took runner-up honors in the 4 x 200 relay in 1:36.45 before Overmyer won the 1,600 run in 4:46.03 and Hunter Jewison followed in 4:51.19.

     The 4 x 100 relay team of Caleb Gorder, Isaac Kosel, Nate Rak and Breitweser took third in 48.14 while Carlson won the 400 dash in 51.48 and Bryce Brovitch was third in 55.39.

     Fritze won the 300 hurdles in 43.12 and Jorgenson was second in 46.10, Jewison took third in the 800 in 2:15.69, and Remington Hagan was sixth in the 200 dash in 25.25.

     After Overmyer won the 3,200 run in 10:44.38, the 4 x 400 relay team of Fritze, Remington Hagan, Brovitch and Carlson ended the track events with a winning time of 3:37.03.

     In the field events, Carlson won the long jump by clearing 18 feet, 11.50 inches; Scott Petersen won the discus with a throw of 123-8 while Damion Hanke took fifth at 92-10.50; and Brovitch cleared 5 feet, 11 inches to finish second in the high jump.

     Spencer Adolphson (at 9-6), Kalvin Hagan (at 9 feet) and Jacob Engst (at 8-6) went 3-5-6 in the pole vault; Jared Kantonen took third in the triple jump with a distance of 35-9.50; and Petersen (at 35-8) and Hanke (at 35-7.25) went 3-4 in the shot put.

     “I was very pleased with how we performed. Times were not the greatest, but we were not pushed in a lot of the races,” said Park Rapids head coach Patrick Deegan. “I figured we would win if we did what we are capable of doing, but I didn’t figure we would win this big. The difference was some of our younger guys stepped up and did great.”

     Jordan Feder took first in the 200 dash in 23.93 and first in the high jump by clearing 6-5 to lead Nevis. Kiefer Miller was second in the discus with a throw of 123-2.50 while Landon Godwin took second in the shot put with a distance of 36-0.50.

     The top-four individual finishers and top-two relay teams advance to the Section 8A meet, which will be held at Walker on Saturday. Field events begin at 10:30 a.m. with running events starting at noon.
