Cardinals take charge in second half to key victory over Panthers

Staples-Motley used runs of 11-0 and 16-0 in the second half to pull away for a 78-34 Mid-State Conference girls basketball victory at Park Rapids Tuesday night.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 10-0 lead before a layup by Olivia Vaadeland and a pair of jump shots by CarsonLee Christenson closed the margin to 15-7 at the 11:29 mark.

After Staples-Motley pushed its lead to 21-7, a 3-pointer by Alyssa Carlson, a jumper by Shelby Pierce, a basket off a rebound and a jumper by Christenson, two free throws by Lydia Lutz, and another jumper by Christenson closed the gap to 28-20 with 3:07 to play in the first half.

The Cardinals closed out the half with a 9-2 run to carry a 37-22 lead into the break.

After Christenson opened the second half with a pair of baskets, four straight layups sparked an 11-0 run as the Cardinals claimed a 50-26 lead with 14:57 to play.

A layup by Vaadeland and two free throws by Christenson kept the Panthers within 54-30 with 13:15 remaining, but the Cardinals followed with a 16-0 run to build a 70-30 advantage with 9:47 left.

A layup by Grace Bateman and a basket off a rebound by Vaadeland concluded the scoring for the Panthers, who were held scoreless for the final 8:59 as Staples-Motley closed the game with an 8-0 run.

Mikayla Wing and Kelsey Rice scored 15 points each to lead the Cardinals, who improved to 2-4 in conference play and 7-9 overall.

Christenson scored a career-high 16 points to lead the Panthers, who fell to 0-6 against Mid-State opponents and 0-13 overall.
