Cardinals' pitchers shut out Panthers in sweep
Jeremy Hoemberg and Alex Jansson pitched shutouts in leading Staples-Motley to a Mid-State Conference baseball doubleheader sweep at Park Rapids in the season opener Tuesday.
Hoemberg allowed five hits and struck out nine as the Cardinals won the opener 11-0 in five innings.
Jansson followed with a four-hit, eight-strikeout performance as Staples-Motley completed the sweep with a 3-0 win in the second game.
In the opener, the Cardinals scored four runs on two hits in the first inning, added three runs on two hits in the second inning, and scored three runs on no hits in the fourth inning.
Levi Erickson doubled in the first inning, Cory Odland doubled in the second inning, Sam Coborn singled in the third inning, Kyle Goplerud singled in the fourth inning and Danny Pike singled in the fifth inning to account for the Panthers' five hits.
Pike started and took the loss while Goplerud finished up. Those two gave up only five hits, but combined for eight walks and three hit batters.
In the second game, the Cardinals scored single runs in the first, sixth and seventh innings to complete the sweep.
Coborn doubled in the first, Pike and Goplerud singled in the second, and Erickson singled in the third to account for the Panthers' four hits.
Odland started and took the loss while Dustin Martine finished up. Those two combined on a five-hitter.
