Park Rapids stayed with Staples-Motley for the first half of the first half before the Cardinals closed the half with a 32-12 run to spark an 87-50 Mid-State Conference boys basketball victory Friday night at the Area High School gym.

A jumper by Max Brown and a three-point play by Tyler Ridlon gave the Panthers a 5-4 lead with 14:32 to play in the first half.

Baskets by Dillon Theis and Christian Ridlon kept the Panthers within 11-9 at the 11:33 mark before a jumper by Paul Dirks and a free throw by Roth Mattson cut Staples-Motley's lead to 17-12 with 9:41 to play in the first half. Two free throws by Dirks kept the Panthers within 21-14 at the 8:35 mark before the Cardinals took control.

Consecutive three-point plays by Jordan Riewer and Jon Bristow gave Staples-Motley a 29-14 edge. A layup off a steal by Riewer pushed the lead to 41-18 with 3:11 to play. Theis hit four free throws and Christian Ridlon scored off a rebound in the final 2:37 as the Panthers faced a 49-24 deficit at the half.

Riewer and Derek Wolhowe opened the second half with 3-pointers as the Cardinals led 55-26 with 16:22 to play. The Panthers responded with an 8-0 run behind jumpers by Brown and Christian Ridlon and two free throws and a layup by Mattson to make it 55-34 with 13:50 remaining.

A 3-pointer and jumper by Dirks and a jumper by Theis closed the deficit to 60-41 with 11:29 left before a pair of layups by Wolhowe gave the Cardinals a 66-41 edge with 9:57 to go.

Two free throws by Dirks and a 3-pointer by Taylor Kimball kept Park Rapids within 70-46 with 7:51 remaining before the Cardinals closed the game with a 27-4 run. Jordan Peterson hit two 3-pointers during that stretch. Layups by Christian Ridlon and Kyle Goplerud accounted for the Panthers' only points.

Wolhowe scored 23 points and Riewer added 17 points to lead the Cardinals, who improved to 5-1 in the conference and 10-3 overall.

Dirks scored 13 points and Christian Ridlon added 10 points to lead the Panthers, who fell to 0-6 in Mid-State play and 0-15 overall.

The win kept the Cardinals in the hunt for the conference title. Crosby-Ironton leads the conference standings with a 7-0 record.
