C-I's fast start sparks victory over Panthers

Another slow start cost the Park Rapids boys basketball team as Crosby-Ironton jumped out to a 26-6 lead en route to an 83-39 Mid-State Conference win at the Area High School gym Friday night.

Six layups by Daniel Hudrlik, three layups by Caleb Baker and a 3-poiter by Jacob Goodwin staked the Rangers to a quick 26-6 lead with 10:19 to play in the first half. Chris Goplerud and Kyle Goplerud had inside baskets for the Panthers.

Two layups by Chris Goplerud, a jumper and two free throws by Kyle Goplerud, and a layup by Andy Waller pulled the Panthers to within 30-17 at the 5:43 mark before the Rangers closed the half with a 19-8 run to build a 49-25 advantage. Goodwin hit a pair of 3-pointers and Baker hit a 3-pointer for the Rangers while two inside baskets by Chris Goplerud and a 3-pointer by Mason Long led Park Rapids.

C-I sealed the win by opening the second half with a 17-2 run. Baker and Michael Hoge had three layups apiece to lead that charge. Tyler McCollum's basket off a rebound was the only points for the Panthers, who trailed 66-27 with 11:13 to play.

Scott Wolff hit a pair of jumpers, McCollum scored off another rebound and Wolff hit another jump shot as the Panthers trailed 71-35 with 4:54 to play.

Two free throws by Jordan Bergquist at the 4:28 mark and a basket off a rebound by Cory Gartner with 50 seconds to play were the only points for Park Rapids down the stretch.

Chris Goplerud had 11 points and nine rebounds to lead the Panthers, who fell to 0-2 in the conference and 0-5 overall.

Baker (21), Hudrlik (16), Goodwin (14) and Hoge (11) all scored in double figures for the Rangers, who improved to 1-1 in conference play and 2-2 overall.
