Bullwinkle's bar, eatery opens in Nevis

Email

Bullwinkle, citizen of Frostbite Falls, president of Moosylvania, is now presiding over a Nevis eatery and bar, his namesake.

Bullwinkle's, operated by Allan and Becky Horton (who bear no resemblance to Boris and Natasha) have remodeled and expanded the log building on Highway 34.

Becky held a penchant for the restaurant business having worked at her aunt's establishment north of Bemidji. After several trips past the vacant Nevis business, they decided to have a look.

Following several inspections, and considerable discussion, they chose to become restaurateurs.

Work began, including caulking and resealing logs, adding a handicap accessible entry and updating and replacing electrical and plumbing equipment.

Camouflage upholstery adds a signature north woods flair.

The name would evolve from a successful moose hunt. Allan's trophy - Bullwinkle - had found its calling.

Bullwinkle's is receiving a warm reception from area residents, Allan said, their signature burgers earning two thumbs up.

The restaurant features homemade fresh soup and lunch specials daily. A unique menu of appetizers is also earning kudos from customers.

Real mashed potatoes - "we peel them ourselves" - accompany the fare. And the last Friday of the month, an all-you-can-eat fish fry with potatoes and gravy, casseroles and fresh desserts will please palates.

Drink specials are featured at the full bar, which has been expanded. Plans call for chili to be cooking and lunch and dinner specials offered during deer season.

Large screen TVs and pool tables provide a pleasant diversion. A pool league is in the formation stage.

"We're going to make it fun," Allan said. "Nothing's written in stone. We want it to be known for our burgers, fresh and purchased locally."

(The restaurant's signature "Bullwinkle" burger incorporates bacon, pepperjack cheese, onions and green, red and jalepe?o peppers.)

"We want it homespun, with generous portions served," he said.

The deep-fried green beans, hot wings and "huge" junk basket are earning raves.

Chicken and fish are also featured and a kids' menu will entice young appetites.

"We want people to leave here satisfied," Becky said.

Bullwinkle's is hosting a grand opening Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19-20 with drink and food specials planned.

The restaurant and bar are open from 11 to 1 a.m. Monday through Friday, noon to 1 a.m. Saturday and noon to midnight Sunday.

Bullwinkle's may be reached at 652-2640.
