Brumbaugh's 47 saves help Panthers give TRF a battle
Early in the first period Tuesday night, it appeared like Thief River Falls was going to skate to an easy win over the Park Rapids-Menahga-Walker-Hacken-sack-Akeley boys hockey team.
Logan Engelstad scored just 59 seconds into the game and Park Rapids' leading scorer Sam Coborn had to leave the game after slamming into the boards.
The Panthers weren't fazed by that injury as Frank Moren scored at the 8:35 mark to tie the game. Levi Erickson and Noah MacPherson received assists on that goal.
Austin Odberg gave the Prowlers a 2-1 lead with a goal at the 13:40 mark.
That would prove to be all the scoring as Park Rapids goalie Cody Brumbaugh made 47 saves to keep this battle of Section 8A teams close at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.
Thief River Falls entered this game rated No. 6 in the latest state Class A poll while the Panthers were coming off a 7-5 loss to Section 8A rival Kittson Central.
After finishing with an 11-6 edge in shots in the first period, the Prowlers controlled play the rest of the way by holding a 16-3 edge in shots in the second period and a 22-4 edge in shots in the final period.
Brumbaugh kept the Panthers in the game, but going 0-for-5 on the power play hurt as Park Rapids fell to 3-5 against section teams and 4-9 overall.
The Prowlers improved to 4-0 in the section and 10-3-1 overall.

Panthers fall to Kittson
J.P. Mortenson's goal on a penalty shot with 3:35 to play sealed Kittson Central's 7-5 win over the Panthers last Saturday.
Coborn and Cory Odland scored shorthanded goals in the first period to offset power-play goals by Kittson Central's Alex Hunt and Zach Gatheridge as the game was tied 2-2. Park Rapids held a 16-9 advantage in shots in the opening 17 minutes.
Kittson Central used goals by Tyler Cosley and Dalton Klegstad to claim a 4-2 lead before a power-play goal by MacPherson and a goal by Coborn tied the game at 4-4. Coborn and Ian Johnson set up MacPherson at the 12:23 mark while Johnson and Jamie Stewart had assists on Coborn's goal at the 14:09 mark. Cosley's shorthanded goal gave the Wolfpack a 5-4 lead entering the third period.
Johnson and Jeff Jacobson assisted on a goal by Erickson 6:19 into the third period as the Panthers tied the game at 5-5. But Kyle Petersburg's goal at the 7:08 mark proved to be the game-winner as the Panthers lost despite having a 48-44 edge in shots.
Brumbaugh made 37 saves for the Panthers.
