Breiland scores 34th goal as Pirates shut out Panthers
Brianna Breiland's 34th goal of the season and a 58-15 advantage in shots led Crookston to a 2-0 win over the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team Friday night at Crookston.
After a scoreless first period in which Crookston held an 18-3 advantage in shots, Breiland scored on a breakaway to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead midway through the second period. Crookston held a 21-6 edge in shots in that period.
Amber Trostad's goal 49 seconds in into the third period concluded the scoring. The Pirates held a 19-6 edge in shots in that period.
Shania Johnson made 56 saves for the Panthers, who had their seven-game winning streak snapped in falling to 1-5 against Section 8A opponents and 9-8 overall.
Crookston improved to 3-2 against section teams and 8-7 overall. The Pirates were rated No. 13 in the latest state Class A poll.
