Braves edge Panthers on Allebach hit
After dropping a close game at Menahga Thursday, the Park Rapids fastpitch softball team rebounded to defeat Pelican Rapids Friday and split games with Moorhead Saturday.
Menahga scored in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 5-4 win before the Panthers used a season-high 22-hit attack to outslug Pelican Rapids 15-10. Park Rapids followed an 8-4 loss to Moorhead with an 11-1 win in six innings to improve to 10-5 overall.
Braves edge Panthers
Joy Haataja led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and scored on Hannah Allebach’s double as Menahga defeated the Panthers.
Three Park Rapids errors gave Menahga a 2-0 lead in the first before the Panthers tied the game in the second when Bailee Jerger blasted a solo home run and Caitlan Isaacson scored on a passed ball.
Singles by Shania Johnson and Jerger and an error gave the Panthers a 4-2 lead in the third before Menahga tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a double by Morgan Clements, an error and an RBI single by Erika Lopez.
Neither team scored until Allebach’s game-winning double in the seventh.
Allebach went 2 for 4 while Savannah Kako picked up the win in relief for the Braves.
Jerger went 2 for 3 to lead the Panthers’ seven-hit attack.
Panthers outslug Vikings
The Panthers scored 12 runs in the final three innings to defeat Pelican Rapids.
Trailing 4-3 after four innings, the Panthers scored three times in the fifth on RBI singles by Nakkita Buckanaga, Isaacson and Hope Johnson.
An RBI bunt single by Nikki Eischens and a two-run double by Buckanaga gave the Panthers a 9-4 lead in the sixth.
Park Rapids sealed the win by scoring six times in the seventh. A two-run single by Shania Johnson, RBI singles by Morgan Dean and Isaacson, and an RBI double by Buckanaga were the key hits in that innings.
Buckanaga went 4 for 5 with three runs and three RBI, Thelen went 4 for 5 and Jerger went 3 for 5 to lead the Panthers’ offense. Dean picked up the win.
Panthers split pair with Spuds
After being held to only four hits in the opener, the Panthers used seven timely hits to win the second game via the 10-run rule.
Thelen scored on an error in the first and lined a bases-clearing triple in the fourth to account for Park Rapids’ runs in the opener.
In the second game, errors and passed balls helped the Panthers score single runs in the second, third and fourth innings for a 3-1 lead.
An RBI double by Thelen and a two-run single by Shania Johnson sparked a four-run fifth inning before an RBI single by Buckanaga and a two-run double by Shania Johnson ended this game early in the sixth.
Shania Johnson drove in four runs while Eischens scored three times for the Panthers. Jerger improved to 8-5 on the season with a complete-game effort.
