Brand's hat trick sparks Panthers' win
McKenna Brand's second hat trick of the season led the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team to its second win of the season Tuesday night.
Heather Brostrom assisted on two of Brand's goals in leading the Panthers to a 5-1 Mid-State Conference win over Detroit Lakes at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena. The Panthers held a 36-16 edge in shots on goal in snapping a six-game losing streak.
The Panthers took a 2-0 lead by scoring twice in the final two minutes of the first period. Brostrom set up Brand at the 15:19 mark and Abby Fischer scored 1:13 later on assists from Ashley Thelen and Hannah Williams.
Detroit Lakes' Emily Raboin scored at the 6:32 mark of the second period before the Panthers claimed a 3-1 lead on Bailee Jerger's goal at the 12:16 mark. Allie Bade assisted on that goal.
Brand completed her hat trick by scoring at the 8:46 and 13:50 marks of the third period. Bade and Brostrom had assists on those goals.
Shania Johnson stopped 15 shots to pick up her first varsity win in the nets as the Panthers improved to 2-8 on the season. The Lakers fell to 3-6.
"The girls really deserved that win. They have been working to improve the team and they finally got to see some of the fruits of their labor," said Park Rapids head coach Chris Albee. "I think having three lines that were all 'switched on' was a big key for us. Everyone was sticking to the plan and being able to roll the lines helped us to wear DL down. Having the kids new to the team put some pucks in the net is a big boost for us. Although we outshot DL, Shania had some stops in some key situations as well. Everyone played very well."
