BONNIE B. HEMENWAY
Bonnie B. Burnham Hemenway, 96, of Park Rapids, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013 at Diamond Willow Assisted Living Center in Park Rapids.
Bonnie B. Schlarbaum was born Sept. 25, 1917 to Edwin and Elizabeth (Rusch) Schlarbaum in Hartley, Iowa. She received her education in the public schools in Southern Minnesota and lived in and around the Round Lake area with the exception of living near Nimrod for a short period of time when her parents moved to a farm in that area. She began working out when she was a teenager doing housework for various neighbors.
As a young woman, she accepted Christ as her personal savior and was baptized at the Church of Christ in Worthington.
On Oct. 31, 1936 she was united in marriage to Melvin Burnham. They lived on his father's farm for awhile, and then moved to a farm north of Round Lake.
Later they moved to a farm 10 miles east of Worthington. During the later years on the farm, she worked for the Campbell Soup Company. She also worked as a waitress, in a bakery and had her own business selling stainless steel cookware. In January 1956, Melvin passed away.
On June 1, 1957, she was united in marriage to Fred Hemenway of Park Rapids. They farmed near Park Rapids until retiring from the farm and moving into a duplex in Park Rapids.
They spent 16 winters in Apache Junction, Ariz. She worked at Kinkel's Laundry and as a cashier at the Logging Camp. Fred passed away Sept. 28, 2012.
Bonnie was a seamstress and sewed most of her own clothes. She also made clothes for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved country western and gospel music. She always had a large garden and canned and froze many fruits and vegetables.
She was a member of the Park Rapids Church of Christ for 55 years.
She is survived by three children, Allen (Barbara) Burnham of Truman, Marvin (Claire) Burnham of Puyallup, Wash., and Marlys (Roger) Lathrop of Glyndon; one stepson, Don (Dorothy) Hemenway of Park Rapids; brother, Alfred Schlarbaum of Minneapolis; 13 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; three sisters, Jesse, Blanche and Pearl; two great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service: 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2014 at Cease Family Funeral Home Chapel in Park Rapids. Pastor Allen R. Burnham and Pastor Scott Warne will Co-Officiate.
Visitation: one hour prior to the services at the funeral home on Friday.
Interment: will be held in the spring of 2014 at the Greenwood Cemetery in Park Rapids.
