A blue moon will reign over tonight's New Year's festivities.

The celestial rarity occurs when a second full moon beams during the month. And since full moons only occur every 29.5 days, blue moons generally happen during months with 31 days.

Blue moons in a 30-day month occur every 2 to 3 years, NASA says.

Nobody's really sure how the moniker "blue moon" came about; it's been around for centuries; but you could Google it from your bar stool to learn about it.
