Bettcher faces another DWI after Mills arrest

Email

The fact that he's had multiple previous convictions, served jail time and currently has no driver's license apparently did not stop Otter Tail County's most famous drunk driver from doing it again.

Daniel Allen Bettcher, 56, whose aliases include Danny Lee Bettcher and Daniel Boettcher, was arrested May 8 in New York Mills on suspicion of drunk driving.

In this latest incident, Bettcher was riding a motorcycle in New York Mills and allegedly ran a stop sign at the intersection of Centennial/84 and Main Avenue, nearly causing an accident, according to the NYM Police Department report.

Bettcher allegedly failed a field sobriety test and was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated. He was transported to Perham Memorial Hospital for a blood alcohol content test. Bettcher refused the test and was charged with DWI, according to Otter Tail County Court documents.

Bettcher has more than two dozen DWI-related convictions and is being held in the Otter Tail County Jail on suspicion of felony first-degree DWI.

Bettcher, 56, made his first court appearance May 11, and was charged with four counts including:

-Refusal to submit to testing

-First degree Driving While Intoxicated

-Driving after cancellation

-Possession of a small amount of marijuana

His next court appearance was scheduled Wednesday, May 20, when he was expected to appear with his attorney.

Since 2000, which is the farthest Bettcher's record goes back in the Otter Tail court's online records, Bettcher has been the subject of a long list of court activity including:

-Aggravated DWI and no proof of insurance, plead guilty July 2000

-Aggravated DWI conviction, May 3, 2002

-In 2002, Bettcher was the subject of a series of probation violation hearings.

Since 2002, court records indicate no activity, with the exception of a notice that he was delinquent on a payment.

As of May 18, Bettcher still owed the county $467 in penalties related to previous offenses.

Most of Bettcher's drinking and driving-related charges preceeded 2000.

When Bettcher was booked into jail, his address was listed as Wadena, but he has listed New York Mills as his previous address.

In January 2004, Bettcher was sentenced to 4½ years in prison for first-degree DWI, his first felony DWI conviction.

He was placed on supervised release in October 2006. In June 2007, he was sent back to prison for a minimum of one year for violating conditions of his release by consuming alcohol and entering a business that sells alcohol.

Court records indicate Bettcher has 26 DWI-related convictions. Bettcher disputed that record, stating he has sometimes been convicted of multiple charges for a single incident. At the time, he estimated his DWI record at about 15.
