Bemidji tops Little Falls to win invitational title
Jessica Andersen and Kyja Penning won medals in leading the Park Rapids gymnastics team to its best showing of the season at Saturday's Park Rapids Invitational at the Area High School gym.
Andersen placed on uneven parallel bars and all-around while Penning placed on bars as the Panthers placed fourth with a season-best 117.75. Bemidji led the five-team field with 133.70 points to edge Little Falls' 133.65 total. Long Prairie-Grey Eagle was third with 118.85 points. Frazee finished fifth with a 109.80.
Andersen had season bests in all four events with an 8.40 in vault, a third-place 8.25 on bars, a seventh-place 7.90 on balance beam and a 7.70 in floor exercise for a sixth-place 32.25 in all-around. Penning finished sixth on bars with an 8.00. The top-six finishers in each event received medals.
The Panthers' best event was vault as Emily Klingenberg's 8.10, Ellen Hoffman's 8.00 and Jessica Petrie's 7.90 led to a 32.40.
In floor, Klingenberg's 7.50, Kirsten Erickson's 7.30 and Hoffman's 6.80 rounded out Park Rapids' 29.30 team score.
Following Andersen and Penning on bars were Klingenberg's 7.70 and Katherine Erickson's 4.80 for a 28.75 team score.
The Panthers had a 27.30 on beam with Katherine Erickson's 7.10, Klingenberg's 6.40 and Kirsten Erickson's 5.90 completing the varsity score.
Klingenberg had season bests in vault, on bars and in floor for a season-best 29.70 all-around score for 11th place. Little Falls' Miranda Peterson won the all-around title with a 34.80.
Posting the top scores in the individual events were Little Falls' Rachelle LeBlanc with a 9.15 in floor, Bemidji's Katie Jensen with an 8.90 in vault, Peterson with an 8.80 on beam and Bemidji's Rachel Bell with an 8.70 on bars.
The Panthers carried a 0-3 record in dual meets into Tuesday's meet at Perham. Park Rapids enters the Moorhead Invitational Saturday.
