Bemidji police investigate freezing death of child
On February 27th, 2014, the Bemidji Police Department, along with members of Bemidji Ambulance, Bemidji Fire and the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a weather related medical call at the Washington Ave Apartments, 924 Carter Circle SE, Bemidji, MN.
At 6:23am, Beltrami County Dispatch had received two telephone calls reference the medical emergency. One from the victim’s mother, and the other from a neighbor.
When officers and Emergency Medical Personnel arrived at the Washington Ave Apartments, they were directed to a 6 year old female, who was inside the front entrance to the apartment building. The child had signs of being exposed to the frigid elements and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The child was transported to Sanford Medical Center of Bemidji and later to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s office in St. Paul.
The Bemidji Police Department is in the process of investigating the death of the child. We are awaiting the results of the forensic examination and are withholding the name of the child until all next of kin have been notified.
As part of our investigation, we are developing a time line as to when the child was last seen and as to how long the child was exposed to the elements. Early morning temperatures in the Bemidji area were -27 degrees with a wind chill of -40.
Along with the initial responding agencies, the Bemidji Police Department would like to thank the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the Paul Bunyan Drug Taskforce and Bemidji Area Schools (ISD31) for their assistance in this ongoing investigation.
If anyone has any information related to this incident, please contact the Bemidji Police Department.
