BEMIDJI — A Bemidji man is in custody after aiming a rifle at a Beltrami County Sheriff’s Deputy.

Shortly after midnight on Oct. 25, Beltrami County Sheriff’s deputies and Bemidji Police officers responded to a report of a possible suicide attempt on Gem Lane Northeast in Bemidji.

Daniel Patrick Scamp, 43, of Bemidji, was alone inside the residence. He advised officers that they were not welcome on the property and that he had a firearm, according to a Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

Deputy accounts of the incident state that law enforcement retreated from the residence to regroup. Scamp emerged and went back into the residence a few times, rifle in hand, before exiting and walking approximately 20 yards away from the building.

A deputy shone a light toward Scamp and ordered him to drop the weapon and lay down on the ground. Scamp turned and pointed the rifle at the deputy before lowering his weapon. Scamp eventually complied and was placed in handcuffs.

It was later determined that the rifle did not have any bullets in the chamber when it was seized on scene. The scene was cleared at 2:54 a.m.

Scamp was transported to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center as witness reports indicated he may have ingested 30 Klonopin or Clonazepam tablets, documents said. A doctor advised that Scamp had no outlying conditions and could be safely transported to the Beltrami County Jail.

Scamp was originally arrested for two counts of felony use of deadly force against a peace officer. Charges were later changed to one count of felony second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. Scamp’s next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 12.
