Record-setting times by Lydia Lutz, Victoria Lutz, Shelby Pierce and Sophie Shogren helped the Park Rapids girls track and field team defend its Subsection 8-29A title Thursday at Vern Weekley Field.

Those four runners opened the meet by winning the 4 x 800-meter relay in 9:54.95 to set a new subsection record. Lydia Lutz followed by winning the 1,600 run in 5:22.14 and Victoria Lutz added a winning time of 2:20.68 to set two more subsection records.

The Panthers added six more winning performances and scored points in all 18 events to compile 242.50 points to win the subsection title for the fifth year in a row. Bagley/Fosston was a distant second with 145 points.

Also turning in winning performances for the Panthers were Heather Goodwater in the 100 hurdles (17.90), Mady Vaudrin in the 100 dash (13.31), Grace Bateman in the 300 hurdles (49.79), Morgan Olson in the 3,200 run (13:06.57), and Nikki Knott in the discus (88 feet, 1 inches) and shot put (31-4).

Park Rapids also had nine runner-up finishes, led by Shannon Taylor, Kyja Penning, Bateman and Vaudrin in the 4 x 100 relay (52.36); and Summer Ellefson, Hannah Wolff, Mandy Schirmers and Lydia Lutz in the 4 x 400 relay (4:13.86).

Shannon Thielen in the 100 hurdles (18.26), Ellefson in the 400 dash (1:02.46), Justine Rittgers in the 300 hurdles (50.98), Pierce in the 800 run (2:23.35), Kaylee Hilmanowski in the 3,200 run (13:17.44), Wolff in the high jump (4-8) and Ellen Hoffman in the pole vault (8-6) had the other runner-up efforts for the Panthers.

Nevis used two winning times to finish fourth with 62 points. Riley Hanson won the 400 dash in 1:01.63 and joined Annessa Feder, Jessica Schunk and Paige Walters on the winning 4 x 400 relay team, which clocked a 4:12.21.

The top-five finishers in each individual event and the winning and runner-up relay teams advance to the Section 8A meet, which will be held Saturday at Crookston.

Girls team scores: Park Rapids 242.50, Bagley/Fosston 145, Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 72, Nevis 62, Blackduck/Kelliher-Northome 60.50, Mahnomen/Waubun 51, Clearbrook-Gonvick 45.
