Arthur C. Oien, 78, of Detroit Lakes, Audubon and Bridgewater, Mass., died on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at Kindred Hospital in Stoughton, Mass., from complications resulting from chronic diabetes.
Arthur Carlisle Oien was born to Alfred Carl Oien and Mable Margaret Martinson on April 10, 1930 in St. Cloud, Minn. He never married, but had an extended family of friends in Minnesota and Massachusetts.
Arthur graduated from Audubon High School and Concordia College in Moorhead. He received a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree from the University of Minnesota in 1954, and took further advanced courses at the University of Minnesota. He served in the United States Army Security Agency from 1954 to 1957, then taught at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, 1960-62; Bemidji State College, 1962-63; and was a professor of history at Bridgewater State College in Bridgewater, Mass., from 1963 until his retirement in 1991.
Survivors include his brother, Waine (Carole) Oien of Sun City West, Ariz., three stepsisters, Delia Hokenson and Tessie Broberg, both of Detroit Lakes, and Ruth Thompson of Florida; one niece and one nephew; eight cousins on his mother's side of the family and three cousins on his father's side, plus many second cousins.
His parents preceded him in death.
Arthur was cremated in Massachusetts. A memorial service will be held at a later date at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Lake Center, so distant relatives can travel to the service at a convenient time. No date for the service has yet been set.
