Arctic Cat is eliminating 100 jobs, primarily at its Thief River Falls facility, the company said Friday.

The cuts represent a 7 percent reduction of Arctic Cat's 1,400 employees. Officials said less customer demand paired with the economic downtown prompted the move for the maker of snowmobiles and ATVs.

"We are rescaling the business to lower production capacity and operating costs, bringing them in line with reduced customer demand," Christopher Twomey, chairman and chief executive officer, said in a press release. "We regret having to take this action and want to thank affected employees for their dedicated efforts."

A spokeswoman would not comment further. The company is in a quiet period pending the release of its third quarter earnings Thursday.

The news was disappointing to Thief River Falls Mayor Steve Nordhagen.

"Obviously, it's a sign of the times in America," he said. "Arctic Cat is a strong company. They'll weather the storm and come back stronger than ever."

Nordhagen said with growing companies such as Digi-Key, the employment picture still is pretty solid in Thief River Falls despite the cuts at Arctic Cat.

"At last count, there are 8,000 jobs in this community," Nordhagen said. "But losing 100 certainly hurts."

The news comes the same week that Roseau, Minn.-based Polaris Inc., another snowmobile and ATV maker, announced it was laying off 100 workers.
