Annual Northwoods Triathlon likely to fill quickly again in 2010
Still searching for a New Year's resolution?
Registration for Nevis' 8th annual Northwoods Triathlon opens at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4.
This year's event will be held Saturday, Aug. 14, setting off from the shores of Lake Belle Taine.
Triathlon registration closed within 11 days last year, and event coordinator Amy Schroeder expects the 2010 event to fill as quickly - if not sooner.
Registrations will be taken online only this year, at www.midwestevents.com. Cost is $50 per individual, $90 for teams. Info required: names, birthdates and T-shirt sizes.
The event has been expanded to 300 individuals and 50 teams (men, women or mixed) in the swimming, biking and running competition.
The quarter-mile swim (wetsuits permitted) begins and ends at the city beach on Lake Belle Taine. Bikers (helmets required) head off over hill and dale on paved roads for a 14-mile ride. Then runners set off on the Heartland Trail for a 5K sprint.
All participants receive a medallion, T-shirt and refreshments.
Check-in begins at 6 a.m. with a pre-race meeting at 7:45 a.m. The race begins at 8 a.m.
Kids races will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Muskie.
Awards for individuals will be presented to the top three males, top three females and top three males and females in each age group.
Age categories are 19 and under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70-plus (males and females).
Relay awards will be presented to the first overall male, female and coed teams.
Race substitutions will be allowed up until June 30; race directors must be notified of the change.
Course record in women's is held by Michelle Andres of Brainerd who finished with a time of 1:05:48 in 2008. Brooks Grossinger of Moorhead holds the men's distinction with 58:25 registering on the clock, also in 2008.
The Nevis-Park Rapids female team of Jean Greseth, Leah Walters and Dawn Pappas hold the course record with 1:17:33, also achieved in 2008.
A pre-race spaghetti dinner will be served from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13 at Nevis School, where packets may be picked up the night before the race.
The Northwoods Triathlon is sponsored by the Nevis Civic and Commerce, with proceeds used to support the health and wellness of residents in the surrounding community.
The triathlon is part of the Tri Minnesota Racing Series. All participants are automatically entered in the series.
