A 24-year-old man was airlifted to an unknown hospital Monday night following a freak accident north of Nevis.

Preliminary reports indicate the man, from Americorps, was working on a trail near Waboose Lake north of Nevis when the van the crew were in got stuck on the sandy beach.

The crew apparently tried to jack up the rear tires and the victim had crawled underneath it.

According to crews on the scene, the jack and van collapse in the sand, pinning the man underneath it.

The accident, just after 5 p.m., occurred in what's referred to as "the gulch" area north of Nevis.

Law enforcement personnel staged an area on County Roads 2 and 40 to set the chopper down. A ground ambulance transported the victim south to the landing zone.

Americorps volunteers usually spend a month in the region helping local hiking groups clear trails. This group arrived Sept. 11.
