9-year-old dies in Hubbard County ATV accident
Park Rapids Minnesota PO Box 111 56470

A 9-year-old boy died Friday afternoon when the ATV he was riding on rolled and pinned him underneath.

His 12-year-old brother was taken by ambulance to North Region Hospital in Bemidji for observation. The boys were identified as Dale Robert Besser, who died, and his brother Ben, who was driving the ATV.

The accident occurred around 2:45 p.m. west of Lake Plantagenet.

"We were cutting wood and I saw this kid running around the neighbor's yard," said Mark Jaycox, who was helping a friends father cut wood on Thistle Drive nearby.

"He came running and dropped to his knees 40 feet away. I knew something was wrong."

Hubbard County authorities said the 12-old was driving with his younger brother sitting behind him.

Jaycox said the older brother, too, was pinned underneath the Honda Foreman ATV, but managed to slither out from under the machine.

Jaycox and the other man jumped onto an ATV and "we followed the trail to where they were," Jaycox said,

He said the boy's torso was completely pinned under the huge machine.

"I got the bike off him in a second" but the boy wasn't breathing, Jaycox said.

He tried administering mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

He said after a few breaths he realized the boy had passed away.

Jill Hoisve, whose father was cutting wood with Jaycox, put the older brother in her car and raced to the boys' grandfather's home nearby.

Hoisve said the two boys and a younger brother were visiting their grandfather for the weekend.

She drove the two boys and the grandfather to the accident scene.

"He was really scared and just covered in mud," Hoisve said of the driver.

Jaycox meanwhile had to run out onto County Road 29 to get a cell phone signal to call 911.

The ambulance transported all three boys and the grandfather to Bemidji where the 9-year-old was pronounced dead.

Both Hoisve and Jaycox were shaken by the experience.

The boys were on a logging trail off County 29 in Rockwood Township. The boys are from Greenbush.

The accident is under investigation by the Hubbard County Sheriff's Department. Numerous agencies responded including Beltrami County. the Minnesota State Patrol, Bemidji Fire Department, Bemidji Ambulance, and Becida First Response.

"This was not good," Hoisve said, shaking her head sadly.
