4th of July parade, pie winners
The Park Rapids 4th of July parade and annual Pie Baking Contest winners have been announced.
Best Themed: Park Rapids Fire Department.
Best Royalty: Menahga 2012 Royalty.
Best Children’s: Miles of Smiles Daycare.
Best Animal: Rockin’ S. Ranch.
Best Antique Entry: Park Rapids Antique Tractor & Engine Club.
Best Organization Entry: Pinecones 4-H Club.
Most Patriotic: Park Rapids Friendly Squares.
Most Crowd Appeal: Park Rapids Fire Department.
Grand Marshal Award: CPL Ernest Malmskog and Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Harriet Malmskog of Park Rapids.
Honorable Mention: Hubbard County DAC – Bearly Used, Salvage Depot, Recycling Center.
The Park Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce gives special thanks to all the participants and sponsors of this year’s parade.
Participants included the American Legion Honor Guard, American Legion Auxiliary Honor Guard of American Legion Post 212, Sons of the American Legion, Scout Pack 58 Park Rapids and Dave Traxler, Honor Guard Commander. The American Legion Post 212 organized the military Color Guard and Honor Guard.
Annette Haas sang the National Anthem.
Parade judges were Mayor Pat Mikesh, Sherry Kimball, Rod Nordberg and Dennis Mackedanz. Parade emcee was David W. Konshok.
The parade sound was provided by Mike Huebrin of 218 Productions.
Thanks to the City of Park Rapids, Public Works Department employees, the Park Rapids Police Department and Chief Terry Eilers, along with the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Department and Sheriff Cory Aukes.
Parade sponsors included St. Joseph’s Area Health Services, Thielen Motors, Ark Animal Hospital, Sleeping Fawn Resort & Campground, Smokey Hills Outdoor Store, Park Rapids Real Estate, Y-Steak House, Park Rapids Downtown Business Association, Main Street Meats, Evergreen Gifts & Fun Park, Rising Hope Foundation’s Angels Attic Thrift Store and Zhateau Zorbaz.
The parade coordinating committee included Emma Moore and Tara Norton, with parade and program support by Fred Rogers (Minnesota Folklore Theater), Rory Palm (Park Rapids Enterprise), Steve Kondziella (John’s Body Shop), Phil Moore, Pete Young (Y-Steak House), Marlene May, Jenny Palm, Teri Mackedanz (Hubbard County Sheriff’s Posse), Beth Palm, Ellie Palm, Ashley Palm, Jake Hildebrandt, Steve Frank (Kings Cottages Resort), Zach Frank and Cooper Swift.
Pie Baking Contest
Beagle Books hosted the 7th annual Pie Baking Contest and Auction. Every baker who placed received an Emile Henry pie plate in either red, white or blue. First place winners received $25. Best in show won an additional pie plate, $100 and a gift basket of pie-related items. The event is a fundraiser for the Park Rapids Area Library. $960 was raised this year.
Double Crust: 1st place – Caramel Apple by Mark Bridge. 2nd place – Cranberry Cherry, Maddie Spalding.
Juvenile Division: 1st place – American Silk Pie, Zach Frank and Cooper Swift. 2nd place – Strawberry Chiffon Pie with Chocolate Crust, Katie Laxson.
Single Crust: 1st place – Pecan Buttercup Squash, Gail Gruis. 2nd place – Strawberry Mousse, Treana Fietek.
Cream/Custard: 1st place – Raspberry Lemonade, Jill Tate. 2nd place, Chocolate Banana Cream, Lilly Tate.
Best in Show: Jill Tate with Raspberry Lemonade.
Judges included Tom Geraedts, Nancy Carroll, Dr. Sean Hightower (of UND), Myah Schultz, Ruth Ann Compton and Ray Niedzielski.
Volunteers Gerry and Dale Germain were on hand to assist the judges and Cathy Peterson, owner of 3rd Street Market, assisted in the auction.
Cash prizes were provided by Friends of the Library, the prize basket was donated by John Michael Lerma of Garden County Cooking and Lerma was also responsible for Emily Henry’s donation of nine pie plates.
