2010 wellness challenge an opportunity for communities to compete
Area residents are being encouraged to "POWER Up in 2010" with a community wellness challenge kicking off in January.
The wellness challenge kick off is from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21 at the Frank White Education Center community room.
Power Up 2010 is an eight-week challenge that's between all area communities: Park Rapids, Menahga, Sebeka, Nevis, Laporte, Akeley and Osage.
The Center for Weight Management, a service of St. Joseph's Area Health Services and Innovis Health, is sponsoring the challenge with Community Education.
Each week, participants will set personal goals centered on POWER tools. The acronym stands for protein and produce, optimism, water, exercise and resisting grazing. Individuals who turn in their points will have an opportunity to win prizes on a weekly basis.
The Center for Weight Management and area businesses donated money or prizes for the wellness challenge.
Missy Lindow, who is the contact person for the challenge, is a physical therapist assistant in the physical therapy department of St. Joseph's Area Health Services and with the Center for Weight Management as a lifestyle counselor and wellness educator.
At the kick off, a physical therapist assistant and lifestyle counselor, a student dietician from Concordia College in Moorhead as well as a Registered Nurse will be available to answer questions.
"We're going to offer free body composition and all kinds of information about exercise, nutrition, healthy eating habits, lifestyle and stress reduction, sleep, all kinds," Lindow said.
The challenge will look at all aspects of wellness.
"We know that wellness isn't just nutrition or just exercise, it's all of it combined," she said.
There will be winners each week and grand prize winners at the end.
"It will be a great time," Lindow said. "I'm excited."
Registration is through Community Education. The cost is a nominal $5 for an individual or $10 for a family. To register, or for more information, call 237-6606
