20-year-old dies in ATV accident Sunday evening
A 20-year-old Waubun man has died from severe head injuries suffered in an ATV accident Sunday evening in Hubbard County.
The Hubbard County Sheriff's Department said Corey Benedix rolled his westbound ATV on County Road 93 in Hendrickson Township in the northeast section of the county.
He died at the scene after being ejected onto the road, one mile west of State Highway 64, Sheriff Frank Homer said.
"He hit the gravel road pretty hard," Homer said. "He wasn't wearing a helmet. It's a sad deal."
The accident was reported just after 6:30 p.m., when the victim's grandfather reported he had not returned from his ride.
His body was transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy, where toxicology tests will be performed.
Benedix is originally from the Laporte area, but showed a current address as Waubun, the Sheriff's Department indicated.
The victim's mother and other family members live about a mile from where the accident occurred.
The fatality is the first this year in Hubbard County resulting from the use of an ATV. In 2008, two people died in ATV accidents.
Several agencies responded to the Sunday crash, including the Sheriff's Department, the DNR, Minnesota State Patrol, Lakeport First Responders and North Memorial Ambulance.
The accident remains under investigation.
