19-year-old lifeguard saves swimmer in Menahga

The quick thinking and CPR training of a 19-year-old lifeguard may have saved the life of a 4-year-old girl.

Around 6:05 p.m. Sunday, the Wadena County Sheriff's Office received a call of a possible drowning at Spirit Lake Beach in Menahga. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, where they found the lifeguard on duty had pulled the 4-year-old from the water. The lifeguard began CPR and the girl was breathing and alert a short time later, the sheriff's office said.

An off-duty nurse was also on scene assisting with the victim.

The 4-year-old was later transported to St. Joseph's Emergency Room in Park Rapids.

The Wadena County Sheriff's Office was assisted on scene by the Menahga Police Department, Menahga First Responders and Tri-County Ambulance.
