13-year-old Texas boy shot in Sheyenne recovers after surgery at Altru Hospital
A 13-year-old victim of an apparently accidental shooting in a Sheyenne, N.D., home is recovering at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, Eddy County Sheriff Darrell Hager said Monday.
Hager said the boy and a friend, also 13 years old, were alone at the friend's home Friday when they got a hold of a handgun.
"His father had a loaded .22 revolver up hidden under some clothes or whatever in the bedroom closet," Hager said.
"They were playing with it, I guess, not knowing it was loaded. He pointed it at the other boy and it went off."
The boy was shot in the side and was taken to Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake before being transferred by ambulance to Altru where he underwent surgery, the sheriff said.
According to Hager, a doctor in Devils Lake said the wound was not life-threatening. The boy is expected to be hospitalized for another day or two for observation.
The boy, whose name was not released, is from Texas. He comes to Sheyenne to visit his aunt during the summer, Hager said.
An investigation into the shooting is not quite finished.
"At this point, it looks purely accidental," Hager said. "At 13, they're old enough they know they shouldn't be playing with real guns."
