100th celebration coincides with Nevis Muskie Days July 20-22
The 100th anniversary of Nevis Public School will be celebrated in grandiose style, in conjunction with Muskie Days, July 20-22.
Coordinators for nearly every class - 1932 to the present - have been recruited to round up alums to make a presence at events and in the grand parade.
Jodi Sandmeyer, who's spearheaded planning for the event, has compiled a 400-page book, replete with history, staff, students, awards, athletics and more. It all began eight years ago with Bryan Wormley, a coach at the time, suggesting coaches be recognized - like teachers - at five- and 10-year intervals, she said.
Sandmeyer, in her second year as principal, saw merit in recognizing not only staff members, but the school itself, a dominant component in the Nevis community.
The book has been an eight-year work-in-progress, and is now available via pre-order and at the reunion.
A full schedule of events - including Muskie Days frolics - appears on the school's website but some of the centennial-related highlights include:
Registration will open from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
Reunion choir practice begins at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Tiger Arena (contact Gary Stennes or the school office for more information). Registration for the school centennial will be from noon to 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria.
A brat gathering will be held on the football field from 4 to 6:30 p.m., with all-state alumni and coaches honored.
An official welcome begins at 7 p.m. in Tiger arena. Making a Difference Awards will be presented to Nevis graduates (living and deceased) who made a significant mark in the world. Nominations will be accepted through June 15.
Those traveling the furthest distance and oldest grads will be recognized. And longest serving staff members will earn rounds of applause.
Classes will gather in classrooms at 8 p.m. to re-connect.
Registration for the reunion resumes Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with an alumni softball tourney from 9 a.m. to noon.
Classes have been invited to create a float for the grand parade, which will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday.
An alumni co-ed basketball tournament will be from 7 to 9 p.m. in Tiger Arena. An alumni volleyball tourney will be held at the same time in the original gym. Contact Ronda DeWulf at Nevis Community Education for more information.
Area churches will welcome the former students at services Sunday morning. Bethany Lutheran is also celebrating 100 years in 2012.
A softball/kickball tourney will begin at noon, followed by fond farewells.
