The annual meeting of the Headwaters Animal Shelter will be held Monday, Oct. 1 in the Fellowship Hall of Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids.

The meeting will kick off at 6:30 p.m. with a presentation by Jimmy Pichner, long-time avian supervisor at the Minnesota Zoo. Pichner retired in August after 34 years as a zookeeper on the Tropics Trail. While at the zoo, he was an integral part of several successful bird conservation projects, including the reintroduction of trumpeter swans in Minnesota.

Pichner will discuss the restoration program and how it brought Minnesota's trumpeter swan population from zero to its current 6,000.

The annual meeting will include the election of new members of the board of directors and other shelter business.

Calvary Lutheran Church is located at the intersections of highways 71 and 34. For more information, call the shelter at 237-7100.
