Itascatur Club is hosting open houses at Soaring Eagle Cross Country Ski Trails this week.

An open house is from 1 to 4 p.m. today (Wednesday), Dec. 29.

Additional open houses will be the first and third Sundays in January and February: Jan. 2 and 16, and Feb. 6 and 20.

Soaring Eagle Cross Country Ski Trails are located 8 miles north of Park Rapids on Hwy 71, across from the Eagle View Golf Course. Look for the sign on the west side of highway that leads to the trailhead.

Ski equipment can be checked out free of charge by youth or adult groups interested in having a fun outdoor winter activity. Such groups could include church groups, youth groups, Kinship, service organizations, businesses, etc.

A Minnesota Ski Pass is required for skiers 16 years old and over. Ski Passes are available through the Department of Natural Resource's electronic licensing system at many convenience stores and outdoors stores in the area. A pass can also be purchased online at

The North Star Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering a babysitter training course from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today (Wednesday), Dec. 29 at their new location at 1900 Division Street, Unit 1, in Bemidji.

The class is for boys and girls ages 11 to 15 who would like to start their own babysitting business.

The program teaches young people the skills needed to be a safe babysitter and smart business owner. Participants will

learn how to tell when there is an emergency and when it's a situation that can be confidently handled.

Skills to be gained include

supervising children and infants; performing basic child-care skills such as diapering and feeding; handling bedtime and discipline issues; identifying safety hazards and preventing injuries; caring for common injuries and emergencies such as choking, burns, cuts and bee stings and communicating effectively with parents.

Participants will also have the option of becoming trained and receiving a certificate in Infant and Child CPR and First Aid.

The training also provides tips on how to run a babysitting business, creating a résumé, interviews with prospective parents and keeping track of clients.

Friday, Dec. 31

The Friendly Squares will welcome the new year with a square dance starting at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31 at Century School.

Members will dance from 8 to 10 p.m., stop for a potluck dinner and then dance again from 11 p.m. to midnight.

The caller will be Roger Lueth and Donna Stone will cue round dances between tips. All square dancers are welcome.

The Park Rapids League of Women Voters will have a meeting about the subject of education funding at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4 at the lower level of Northwoods Bank in Park Rapids.

The League of Women Voters Minnesota position on financing of education is: "All Minnesota children should have equal access to a good public education. State funding for education should be at a level that makes programs of comparable substance and quality available to all. A student's access to a good education should not depend on the wealth of his or her school district."

LWVMN has prepared a six-page briefing paper on the subject of education funding. The briefing paper will be the subject of the Park Rapids' League of Women Voters' program Tuesday.

Region 2 Arts Council will offer a free grant-writing workshop from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5 in the R2AC office, 426 Bemidji Ave., the historic Carnegie Library Building.

The workshop is for anyone interested in applying for an arts grant within the R2AC area (serving Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods and Mahnomen counties).

This workshop will familiarize potential applicants with the application process, what projects are eligible, how to develop a project budget and other valuable tips.

First City Squares of Bemidji is hosting a square dance on Friday, Jan. 7 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the United Methodist Fellowship Hall, 9th and Beltrami. Plus tips first half hour. Auditions for Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs will be held on Friday, Jan. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the historic Chief Theater in downtown Bemidji, home of the Paul Bunyan Playhouse. Please bring 16 bars of music to sing as well as a prepared monologue. Actors aged 6 to 80 are needed to fill the various roles.

Ministry of Jazz will return to Perham on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. for a performance at the ITOW Veterans Museum. Comprised of well-known jazz musicians from the Fargo-Moorhead area, the group will give an uplifting concert of Dixieland Jazz guaranteed to warm your spirits and raise the roof. This is a highly energetic and entertaining jazz band whose members perform weekly for conventions, dinner parties, holiday parties and wedding dances.
