Thursday, June 24

Members of the Pine Avenue Quartet will perform from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m, Thursday, June 24 at St. John's Lutheran church.

Musicians include piano accompanist Jane Wolff and vocalists Deane Johnson, Anita Hannemann, Rita Dalzell, and Dave Keller.

They will perform light, vocal jazz renditions of favorite songs. People are invited to bring lunch; bars and beverages will be served.

Friday, June 25

A Festival of Authors and Artists will be held in Dorset Friday, June 25.

The event is an expansion of festivals held previous summers. This year it will be from noon to 8 p.m.

People can receive signings from many local authors and attend many other special events put on by the shops.

Sister Wolf Books is hosting the literary guests. Head to Dorset to enjoy many authors from the area who have published material locally as well as nationally.

Also, event-goers can enjoy other events from painters to carvers.

The festival is a way for Dorset to highlight some of the local Minnesota authors and artists.

Restaurants other shops will offer specials during the day.

Authors include William Kent Krueger, who writes the Cork O'Connor mystery series; Dana Holm, who has published Itasca State Park photography; Joseph Plut, who wrote a biography about conversations he had with Jon Hassler; Anton Treuer, who wrote a history novel about Ojibwe in Minnesota; and Maureen Gibbon, fiction author.

Artists will line the streets to demonstrate and sell their work. The art show is by invitation only.

Artwork will include mosaics, blown glass, bead work, pottery, acrylic artistry, jewelry, designing, glass fusing, stained glass and photography.

The Minnesota Folklore Theater of Akeley - now on Broadway - will host a gala grand opening during Paul Bunyan Days, June 25-27.

The celebration will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday, and from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday in the former Akeley Hardware building.

The event will include music, a silent auction and raffle for Guthrie Theater tickets.

Saturday, June 26

The All Veterans Memorial Committee will be at the Park Rapids Farmers Market Saturday, July 26 on Main street.

They will have some of the smaller memorial stones available.

Piano students of Jody Ziemann will also be performing at 10 a.m. Piano students, former and present, are invited to come and play but must first contact Jody Ziemann at 732-9826 or Carol Ashley at 732-9607.

Sunday, June 27

St. Peter's Catholic Church will host its 20th annual turkey dinner and parish festival from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 27.

The event includes a community dinner and festival, a bake sale, cake walk, "bottle of something," a silent auction, bingo and games for kids.

The Hubbard County Sheriffs office will be holding ATV youth CD safety training from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 27 at the law enforcement center.

Students must be 11 years old by class start date. Fee is $5.

CD's are available for pickup at the sheriffs office and must be completed prior to class.

Don't miss the boat. Join the Becker County Historical Society for a Sunday History Cruise at Fair Hills Resort on Pelican Lake.

The cruise will be from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, June 27 aboard the 60-foot Big Pelican excursion boat.

Learn about how steamboats traveled the Pelican River.

Tickets for the cruise must be purchased in advance. Snacks will be provided and a cash bar will be available. Tickets are available at the Becker County Museum during regular museum hours. Proceeds benefit the Becker County Historical Society's local history programming.

Tuesday, June 29

The Park Rapids class of '80 will hold a planning meeting for their 30-year reunion at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 29 at The Good Life Café.

Thursday, July 1

A Jingle Dress Healing Ceremony for body, mind and spirit will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 1 at North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji.

Opening ceremonies begin at 4 p.m. with the traditional feast at 4:30 p.m. Invited drums only; all jingle dress dancers invited.

The event is free and open to the public. Bring lawn chairs.

Saturday, July 3

Ruby's Pantry food distribution will be held Saturday, July 3 at Assumption of Our Lady Catholic Church in Menahga.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. with distribution at 10:30 a.m.

Bring multiple baskets, totes or food coolers.

The city of Laporte will hold its 4th on the 3rd, celebrating Independence Day Saturday, July 3.

The events will be held in and around the center of town, including a flea market from noon to 6 p.m., a kids' parade at 2 p.m., Main Street parade at 3 p.m. and the first annual Laporte Derby, a soapbox derby-type event, from 3:30 to 6 p.m.

Games and contests will be held for all from 6 to 8 p.m., a street dance featuring the Haz Beenz classic rock band from 7 to 11 p.m. and fireworks at 10 p.m.

Sunday, July 4

The annual Firecracker Footrace will be held on Sunday, July 4 at Heartland Park.

Registration is from 6:30 to 8:15 a.m. with the race beginning at 9 a.m.

This race has several age divisions in a 5K and 10 K walk or run. 

There will be a free Kids Fun Run for children ages 12 and under after the 5K and 10K races.

Monday, July 12

A summer brunch for area PEO members will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 12 at the Detroit Lakes Holiday Inn.

The theme is "a beach party."

Darlene Rolle, comedian with Jasper's Jubilee Summer Theater, will provide entertainment.
