Teams battle for title at Water Wars
By Sarah Smith
In a rousing start to the Legends and Logging weekend, 16 teams faced off Thursday night in downtown Park Rapids for the annual Water Wars battle.
The Park Rapids Fire Department wives, last year’s winners, even got there early to test the conditions of the tinted pavement for slipperiness.
In the end, Northwoods Bank’s team prevailed over all comers.
But the highlight, and the hardest fought duel, came when Zorbaz’ team, which was eliminated early on, took on the winners in a grudge match, with $100 going to the Park Rapids Chamber of Commerce, pledged by Zorbaz owner Robb Swanson.
“We’ll go until the water tower’s empty,” joked emcee Butch DeLaHunt as the lead teetered back and forth. Northwoods eventually prevailed.
A couple hundred people lined the streets to watch the event, with the usual two dozen children frolicking in the puddles left on Main Avenue.
State Bank’s team of suit-clad competitors got their dress-wear soaked, so they were hoping for casual Friday to get the uniforms dried.
A bluegrass band took the 2nd Street Stage afterward, entertaining until dusk.
The activities conclude Saturday. Full schedules of events are available at most area businesses and online.
