 This galaxy was discovered by William Herschel on April 14, 1785.  It is part of the original Herschel 400 observing program by the Astronomical League.  My visual observation of it on May 18, 1985 on a night of poor transparency due to high humidity reads: "Large, elongated, galaxy seen only by averted vision.
